Tommy Emmanuel, the Grammy-nominated guitarist and songwriter, released the new video for his cover of "Deep River Blues," this past week. In this new track from Emmanuel's Accomplice One album the vocal duties are shared with Jason Isbell in this timeless duet, filmed for the video along a streambed in rural Nolensville, Tennessee. The video, directed and edited by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard, features Emmanuel finger-picking his acoustic guitar, his hands muddied and bandaged, though the music he produces is clean, pure, and satisfying.
In a recent interview with the magazine Cowboys & Indians, Emmanuel talks about his collaboration with Isbell:
“Firstly, Jason was an obvious choice for ‘Deep River Blues’ as he’s from Muscle Shoals [Alabama] and has the exact vocal style I was looking for this style of song. I have been a Doc Watson fan since I first heard him in the early ’70s. Doc and I did some shows together about 10 years back and he was a great gentleman to be around. I think his influence was the fact that he always stuck to his way of doing things and never got swayed by trends.”
